Drinkability

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — Brewer Bert @ 11:37 am

There is such a word as “drinkability”…I swear! Drinkability refers to how well a particular beer sits on ones pallet. A highly drinkable beer is a well balanced beer despite the alcohol level and or hop level. A good example of a beer with poor drinkability is a very strong Bock beer that has a mouth feel like 10W-30. Another example is an IPA that has so much hop bitterness that you can’t taste malt, or your dinner for that matter.

Back in 1997 when we opened the Milwaukee Ale House we experimented with allot of beer recipes trying to find the perfect balance between variety of styles and drinkability. A number of those beers are still on our menu today such as…. Downtown Lites, Solomon Juneau Ale, and our flagship Louie’s Demise Amber. Please enjoy one of our highly drinkable brews.

Cheers!

What makes Downtown Lites a Honey Ale?

This is a question I field a number of times during the year, especially during boat tour season. The question arises from the fact that our second biggest selling beer at the Ale Houses doesn’t taste like or smell like honey….so why use such an expensive ingredient that you can’t really taste? The reason craft brewers use honey in beer is to lighten the body, add a subtle flavor and color while maintaining an acceptable alcohol level. There are certain sugars produced from malt that don’t ferment into alcohol and carbon dioxide resulting in extra carbohydrates and a heavier body. If we simply remove some of the malt from a recipe we end up with a weak poor substitute of a beer. By adding honey, which leaves no residual carbs, we get a full strength beer with a lighter body and less carbs. I wouldn’t call it diet beer but, it’s a hell of a lot better than what the big boys offer.

Cheers.

New year, New Beer

It seems surreal that we are starting a new decade, until you think of our industry, American Craft Brewers. So much has happened in recent years with quality and variety, technology, and access to products. You should recognize that this is the best time in history to be a beer lover - EVER. Not just because we can Tweet about the first sip of a new experience, but because we as craft brewers have matured to a business level that will mean reliable, imaginative, groundbreaking products for many years to come. Our packaging brewery grew 138% in 2009. Thank YOU for that, and cheers to a delicious future!

Come participate in the Milwaukee Brewing Company bucket pitch game outside of the Hi Hat Garage for your chance to win free pints Louies Demise or one of our newest, most talked about brews, Monkey Paw IPA (it’s some seriously powerful voodoo!). You can also win t-shirts and be entered to win a case of Milwaukee Brewing Company beer EVERY week until the end of summer! Have your beer goggles ready because we are getting this party started!

I will also be at Landmark Lanes tonight pouring free samples of Louies Demise and giving away free swag to a few lucky people. The party is kicking off at 10:00! Hope to see you there! Don’t forget, we have our killer Hefeweiss on tap at the Side Bar in Landmark Lanes as well! Nothing beats a super fresh pint of our Hefe to kick off the weekend….

Women enjoy Beer

I came across this interesting blog.  http://www.womenenjoyingbeer.com/

As a new beer drinker it is always interesting to hear about what people are thinking and why they choose the Ale’s they do.   I am not usually one to dive into things that are “for women only”, but found some thoughtful, interesting comments here.

I would be interested to hear comments on the blog and what makes an Ale appeal to you!

We just installed the huge Rite Hite fan into the brewery. It is Huge. Something that you just have to see.  Keeps the whole place cooler during the brews, which is great!

Louie’s Drinkers and Brewers Fans

I realize that this basically encompasses all of milwaukee *wink*

Just a quick little tip when going to the brewers games this year.  In case you didn’t know your favorite beer is at Miller Park at TGI Fridays.  I know you’re pumped!  As we are a small brewery with a big name we often find ourselves being pushed aside by the big Man. So help  your favorite beer get some love at the games. Even though he is in a dark corner ASK for Louie! He is there we promise!

Cheers! Go Brewers!
